Responsibility, Learning, & Advising – Student Reminders

You are not responsible for the programming you picked up in childhood.  However, as an adult, you are one hundred percent responsible for fixing it.  ~Ken Keyes, Jr.

Education is a process of striving, learning, and ultimately, succeeding.  When one is younger, there is constantly the wish for freedom and to “grow up.” Perhaps it is during the college years that we finally have the opportunity to “grow up.”

As Ina Robinson of the New Martinsville campus said at the beginning of the semester, when at college, besides learning a degree, learn to accept responsibility and accountability.

Whether your tuition and college expenses come from your parents, yourself, or scholarships, make sure the time and money that goes into your education is well spent.  Good investments require intelligence and wisdom; make sure you are wise about how you approach your education.

For instance, there are those who may never acquire the opportunities that you have.  There are those who have never and may never get the chance to pursue a higher education.  Do these folks a favor.  Don’t waste this chance or take it for granted.  Give these years meaning and make them account for something.

This is the time to grow.

There are currently two very important reminders:

As you can see from the schedule below, registration for the Fall 2011 semester begins on April 12th.  It would definitely be in your best interests to talk with your advisor before then.  Furthermore, considering how many students attend this college and how many students your advisor is advising, it would be wise to look into talking to your advisor as soon as possible. E-mail your advisor to set up a meeting to ask about where you stand academically and what classes you should take next fall.

Secondly, you should also stop by the service center today and inquire about possible scholarship opportunities for your next year of college.

Finally, it is important for everyone to know of “Fantastic Fridays” at the Academic Success Center.  Every Friday there will be free soda, free popcorn, free coffee, and most importantly, free tutoring! If you are having trouble in a course, or even if you would just like to review, you should definitely take the Academic Success Center into consideration.

Duty is what one expects from others.  ~Oscar Wilde

We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future.  ~George Bernard Shaw
