It’s the beginning of Spring Semester!

Once again there is the sound of sneakers quickly shuffling along the hallway as students hurry to class, equipped with books, binders, pencils, notebooks, and freshly printed schedules in hand. There is a line at the bookstore while students wait to get the best deal on the latest required textbooks, and there appears to be even more students at the already busy service center.  These are just a few sights and sounds of the first few days of classes.  It’s the beginning of another semester at the New Martinsville campus and students and faculty are back after a seemingly quick winter break.

Despite the campus being busy with all of the hustle and bustle of a new semester, there was still the opportunity to speak with the people who will be guiding and working with these students.  Each had the following words of wisdom and lessons they wish every student would take to heart:

“Besides learning a degree, learn to accept responsibility and accountability.  Be accountable for your actions, and be responsible” – Ina Robinson

“Education is the only thing you can bank on” – Lisa Slie

“Procrastination is the worst thing they can do when it comes to their college education” – Bob Gibb

“Education should never be a scary thing” – Dr. Sherri Buerdsell.

We all know that the beginning of a new semester can be a nerve-wracking time for students.  There are those students who are just starting out at college this semester and the daily schedule is totally new to them.  Students can also find themselves getting anxious at the prospect of being one semester closer to graduating from college.  The decisions they are facing right now can be especially frightening, let’s remember this as we help them settle into the new semester.
